Since releasing Little Earthquakes back in 1992, Tori Amos has garnered a fan base who appreciate her incredible songwriting, personal storytelling, and intricate musicianship. As captivating as her studio albums are, Amos reaches an even higher plain of artistry – and connectivity with fans – in the live setting.
On Friday, Aug. 14, The Auditorium Theatre in Chicago was packed with people eager to hear how the new songs from the politically-charged In Times of Dragons, which was released via Fontana Records, earlier this year, would sound positioned amid the material they have loved for decades.
Tammy Mattson, who was seeing the show with her twin sister Katie, already loves what she’s heard from In Times of Dragons.
“I think it’s incredible. It’s absolutely breathtaking. She never disappoints, ever,” Tammy Mattson said. “It just gets better and better. I’m speechless from what I’ve heard so far.”
Another fan, Rachelle Noble, explained that what she loves most about Amos is how she has evolved as an artist and how, in turn, Noble has evolved as a fan.
“I don’t have a favorite album, actually. I have songs I like on each album tonally. As she’s evolved in her discography, I’ve evolved with it and I love that,” said Noble. “At first, I was not about the whole band thing, but it grew on me, so To Venus and Back, I do like that album now. I love it. I truly like them all.”
Amos has the type of loyal fan base that is typically associated with bands like Phish and Dave Matthews Band. Folks who go to show after show to completely immerse themselves in the details, big and small, that emerge from night to night. Whether it’s a live debut or rarity on the setlist, or a special rendition of a popular song, each night features special moments that are truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Dina Zmuda has seen Amos many times dating back to the Under the Pink Tour.
“She keeps it unique every night,” said Zmuda. “And she’s a girl’s girl. She’s been my heroine inspiration since I was a teenager in my formative years. So thanks, Tori. If she hears this. Thank you so much.”
At the Auditorium Theatre on Friday night, Amos once again proved that she is one of the most interesting and engaging artists touring today. And, the next time she comes through Chicago, fans will be lining up to enjoy another magical evening.
