On Saturday, March 5, Chicago music fans were treated to a night of intricate instrumental music compliments of Khruangbin and Nubya Garcia at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom. From expansive jazz to psychedelic funk the soulful sounds coming from the stage transported the audience to a higher plane.
“Hi everyone. Thank you so much,” said Garcia near the top of her set. “We’re so blessed to be in Chicago.”
“Let’s go for a ride,” she later added.
The accomplished English saxophonist – joined by Sam Jones (drums), Daniel Casimir (bass), and Chicago’s own Jahari Stampley (keys) – used her opening set to share music from her debut album, Source. “Pace,” which Garcia described as encapsulating the hustle and bustle of life and the importance of balance, was a stand-out at the end of the set.

While Garcia took fans on a journey through her debut album, Khruangbin invited everyone to join them on a soulful intergalactic adventure. Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar) and Donald Ray “DJ” Johnson Jr. (drums) played most of the show from their elevated spaceship platforms with Lee and Speer coming down to the stage to wow the people of earth with their out-of-this-world talents from time to time.
The sold-out show was the perfect opportunity to dance your cares away and get lost in the magic of music.
