Please join us in congratulating Rebellious Magazine Founder Karen Hawkins for being named one of the recipients of the 2021 Studs Terkel Community Media Awards.
A virtual awards ceremony will be held on May 13.
The Studs Terkel Award is given to Chicago reporters, editors, producers, videographers and photographers who exemplify the values of Studs Terkel’s journalism, by taking risks in covering social issues, according to nonprofit Public Narrative, which hosts the award.
The three other winners of the 2021 Studs Terkel Community Media Award are:
- Brandis Friedman, WTTW
- Maureen O’Donnell, The Chicago Sun-Times
- Michael Puente, WBEZ
The winner of the 2021 Uplifting Voices Award is:
- Tonika Lewis Johnson, The Folded Map Project
The winner of the 2021 Ripple Effect Award (the second ever, after Nikole Hannah-Jones in 2019) is:
- Jamie Kalven, Invisible Institute
The 26th Annual Community Media Awards will take place virtually at 5:30 p.m. CT on Thursday, May 13, 2021—three days before what would have been Terkel’s 109th birthday. Register for the event here.
