In the days immediately after the election, not one, not two, but three of our fantastic freelancers approached me with either first-person essays or interviews with women who wanted to tell their abortion stories. You can read two of those stories on the site this week (‘I Just Want to be a Good Mom‘ and How One Former Pro-Lifer’s Reproductive Choices Influenced Her Presidential Pick), and the third will be in an upcoming issue.
It’s striking that in the aftermath of Nov. 8, this is, for us, the most consistent issue that’s emerged. It’s a reminder of how critically important this conversation is. We must keep talking. We must keep fighting. We must keep sharing our secrets with each other.
It’s also striking that the two women who shared their stories for this week asked that their identities not be revealed. One uses a pen name, and the other just her first name. Also a reminder, that this is an intensely private decision that public officials feel they get to make for us.
I hope you are as touched and inspired by their stories as I am.
In Rebellion,
Karen
