In the spirit of a recent Pluck column, here’s a transcript of how conversations about my new job have been going:

Friend: Hey, how’s your new job?
Me: Awesome!
Friend: I can’t imagine doing all of that travel! Where have you been?
Me: My first week was in Dallas for training.
Friend: Uh-huh.
Me: Then I sat on my couch for 3 weeks…
Friend: Oh.
Me: …And now I have an assignment in…um…well….Northbrook.
Friend: Illinois?!
Me: Heh.
Friend: *pause* They have a really good mall.
Me: Yeah, but there’s no Orange Julius.

Busted.

After all the hype about my high-flying new job, the havoc I was planning to wreak across the country and the arguments about Words with Friends with flight attendants I had already mapped out, my first client is “local.”

I’m thrilled to be spending the summer in Chicago, don’t get me wrong.

And while I’m grounded, so to speak, I’m hoping more of you will send me guest posts about your travel misadventures like my co-worker Ellen.

My next MHC challenge: getting a picture of Bessie Amelia with the geese at my new office…

Rebellion begins at home,
