Welcome to Chicago’s Most Rebellious Gift Guide!
We’re excited to share gift ideas for the feminist on your list from some of our favorite women-owned and feminist-friendly Chicago shops. From lipstick that will rock her world (wink) to technology tips & tricks, we’ve got a little sumthin’ sumthin’ for everyone. Happy shopping!
For Her Reading Pleasure: Where to Buy
Women & Children First bookstore is a feminist happy place, with knowledgeable staff, books, gifts and so much more. Overwhelmed? Don’t worry, they also offer gift cards. The store is participating in the Small Business Saturday Passport Program, which gives shoppers in Andersonville the chance to gather stamps at 21 local retailers and entry into a raffle for fabulous prizes. Who doesn’t love a good raffle?
For Her Reading Pleasure: What to Buy
Our Rebellious writers and reviewers have no shortage of feminist book recommendations and interviews with authors. The three authors featured above all read at Women & Children First this year and represent the diversity of books and genres available, from poetry (“Scriptorium“), to non-fiction (“Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape“) to verse novels (“Another Brooklyn“).
For Good Vibes (Literally): 5 Picks from Early to Bed Owner Searah Deysach
Early to Bed is also participating in the Small Business Saturday Passport Program in Andersonville.
Swan Wand Mini
In three words: “My Personal go-to.”
In three words: “I love that.”
In three-ish words: “Eight speeds, portable, discreet.”
The Womanizer Pro 40
In three words: “The worst name.” But: It’s a must-try for users who are meh about traditional vibrators — it both sucks and vibrates.
Shadow Rabbit Vibe II
Best for: “Someone who wants to do no work.”
Note: The Rabbit vibe is from the “50 Shades of Grey” collection, a fact that Searah says has freaked some buyers out. That said, it’s still a good dual-action choice.
Bring your family (or escape them) at ComedySportz Chicago! Shows are held every week. Newcity newspaper says, “Fast-paced, consistently positive show … ComedySportz has clearly hit on a winning formula, proudly maintaining the title of longest-running short form improv comedy show in Chicago”!
For The Best. Dress. Ever.
The tagline for Measuremake says it all: “Dresses that fit. No bullshit.” The company’s stylists take measurements, then clients pick the color, neckline, sleeve type and skirt style, and voila! The perfect, custom-made dress.
For App Happiness
This fall, Inspire Girls Academy has been offering classes for tech-savvy professional women looking for some new tips and tricks. The last session, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: How Apps Can Make You More Efficient” is from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at The Literacenter. The $30 admission fee benefits the academy’s STEAM-focused Afterschool Programs at three Chicago Public Schools.
For Transformative Tunes
Music writer and photographer Laurie Fanelli has been chronicling Chicago concerts by the best female acts all year, and even if you missed a show, you can still share the music. Shown above: soul singer Lizz Wright, feminist punk band War on Women and the mesmerizing Christine and the Queens.
